Assam Royale is built like a karak base with better manners. Assam CTC gives it the strength and the dark, malty body that holds colour straight through milk. On its own that can turn blunt, so we lift it with Darjeeling long-leaf, which brings the aroma back into the cup. The result is a morning tea that is strong without being harsh, as good neat as it is with milk and a little sugar.

How to Steep

What is Assam CTC tea?
CTC stands for crush, tear, curl, a way of processing Assam leaf into small granules that brew fast, strong and dark. It is the backbone of karak and every serious breakfast cup. Ours is blended with Darjeeling long-leaf so the strength comes with aroma.
Is Assam Royale good for karak?
Yes, it is the right kind of leaf for it. The Assam CTC gives the strength and colour karak needs, and the Darjeeling lift keeps the cup aromatic instead of flat. Simmer it with milk, cardamom and sugar as you normally would.
Does Assam tea have a lot of caffeine?
Yes. Assam is among the strongest black teas, and CTC processing extracts quickly, so expect a full, fast-arriving cup, roughly a third to a half of a coffee. Drink it in the morning or early afternoon.
What does Assam Royale taste like?
Malty, dark and brisk, with an aromatic finish the plain CTC cannot give you. Neat, it is bold. With milk, it turns round and caramel-deep without losing its character.
Should I add milk to Assam Royale?
It is built to take milk, but it does not need it. Steep three minutes for a neat cup, four if milk is going in. Sugar is optional; the malt carries a natural sweetness.
What is the difference between Assam Royale and English Breakfast?
English Breakfast is our single-origin whole-leaf Darjeeling doing the morning job with brightness. Assam Royale is the heavier build, Assam CTC muscle with a Darjeeling lift. If you take milk every time, start here.
